Stefan Zimmer passed away today

January 22nd, 2010 by Cindy Kaempfer

zimmerStefan Zimmer, a “true-green” Green-White member, passed away today. He will always be remembered as a great player, coach, general manager, and friend. We can also never forget his wonderful meat and sausage at all the Schlachtfests and “Steve’s famous burgers” and Hungarians at all the tournaments. At our 45th anniversary, he was elected “Mr. Green-White” – a title he earned and proudly held.

Mr Zimmer was not only a great player, coach, manager, and friend, he was the wonderful, happy, father, grandfather and husband to his family. He was always surrounded by the ones he loved, and always made sure everyone around him was happy—he had a gift that we will always remember—love to all of you –Susie, Moni, and Tina and the kids, and to your mom—

I moved to the Chicago area from Cleveland in the fall of 1981 and I heard Green-White was looking for a goalkeeper. Steve was the first person I met at Green-White and I remember how accommodating and welcoming he was. He was very good to me. I moved back to Cleveland in 1987 but whenever I pass the Green-White facility on my visits to Chicago I fondly remember my days with the club. It’s funny I have been thinking of Steve lately and he is part of the reason I googled the Metropolitan Soccer League to see how my old team was doing. God bless you Steve and to your family I am very sorry for your loss. Have a pleasant journey home. With love and warmest regards, Terry Collier

The first time I came in contact with Mr. Zimmer was when I was a member of the juniors. Always a welcoming presence around the clubhouse. I really enjoyed the sausages he made for the summer party. I had the pleasure of playing for him in the first team during and after college. Always a personal inspiration to me to work harder, do better and win the game for Green White. When John Dunkas invited me to come back and play with the “Altern Herren” in the summer tournament, I didn’t need to be asked twice. The first summer I didn’t see Mr. Zimmer but enjoyed plenty of his homemade Hungarian’s. I am so thankful that I got to see my old coach last summer and spend some time with him. I always tried to play my best for him and the club.I will always remember Herr Zimmer with much respect and appreciation. My deepest condolences to his family on our mutual loss. God Bless and thank you Steve for all you did for me.

    Best Regards,

    Maynard “Allen” Sangster, Jr.

It was with sadness that I heard of the death of Steve. I had known him from the time I played on the Green White kids team in the late 1950′s. Steve was a great player that I loved to watch. My condolences to his family and the entire Green White family on your loss.

    regards, Tony Lukcevic
